Sinclair Volleyball drops first home match to Lakeland

Dayton, OH – The Sinclair (0-1/0-1) Volleyball team played its first match of the 2017 season tonight against visiting Lakeland (1-0/1-0).  Not only was this the season opener for both teams but this was also the conference opener with Lakeland earning a 3-2 fifth set win.

In typical fashion, both teams started the new season making unforced errors.  Coming out of a Lakeland timeout up 20-18, Sinclair was able to put the Lakers away 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead.

The second set the Lakers returned the favor as they evened the match posting a 25-18 win as both teams were now getting into the match.

The third set would turn out to be the most exciting set.  Lakeland seemed to be in complete control and capitalizing on the big emotional win in the previous set.  Up 17-10 and rolling, Sinclair was able to string together an impressive collection of points to pull even at 17-17.  Both teams fighting desperately not to drop the set and let their opponent take a critical 2-1 lead into the fourth set.  Both teams had opportunities to serve for the win but could not find a way to capture the win.  Finally up 29-28, Lakeland put the 3rd set away with the 30-28 win.

Usually after winning such an emotional long set, all the momentum stays with the winning team and carries them through to the next set.  Not tonight.  Sinclair fired back hard and fast as the fourth set was really over before it started.  Sinclair controlled every aspect of the 4th set so much that Lakeland only called one timeout in the 25-15 blowout.

Onto the fifth and deciding set.  Once again uncle momentum switched sides and found its way back to Lakeland.  The Lakers pulled out to a 10-6 lead forcing Sinclair to call a timeout to stem the visitors run.  A few points later, Sinclair had to use their 2nd and final timeout of the set down 13-7 to try and find some magic.  Not tonight, as the Lakers were too much and won the match 3-2 on a fifth set victory 15-9.
