Sinclair Women’s Basketball comes back against Cincinnati State to win at home 61-58
The Sinclair Women’s Basketball (10-10, 4-6) won back to back games and are back at .500 with a home win against Cincinnati State (16-8, 6-3) to split the series.
Turnovers were a problem for both teams. This contributed to the lack of offense by both sides in the 1st and 2nd quarter. Sinclair was only able to score 10 points in the opening quarter with Ashtin Brandon leading the team with 5 points. Chloe Mayfield-Brown contributed a 3-point FG, while Maya Murray had 2 points of her own. Cincinnati State led 10-14.
The 2nd quarter did not start off well for the Tartan Pride. The Surge of Cincinnati State started the quarter off with a 10-0 run to make the score 10-24. Sinclair went off with their own run by scoring 13 points to Cincinnati State’s 2 points. Alona Skipper went off with 3 3-point FGs in the 2nd quarter while Ashtin Brandon added another 4 points (all with free throws). At halftime, the Tartans were done 23-28 to the Surge.
Cincinnati State kept their close lead into the 3rd quarter by matching Sinclair with 14 points apiece. Offense looked sharper going into the 2nd half and turnovers were not as prominent. The scoring was more evenly distributed as well through the lineup with 5 different players able to score. Alona Skipper and Sara Thornton each had 4 points. Madison Schroeder, Maya Murray, and Shirneal Burnside each added 2 points for the Tartans.
The Tartans looked like a different team in the 4th quarter. Turnovers were down and offense was up. With 7:50 remaining, the Tartan Pride came back to tie the game 42-42. Sinclair was finally able to take the lead with 4:32 remaining with a score of 50-44. Sinclair’s offense came alive in the 4th quarter and were able to outscore Cincinnati State 24-16 in the closing quarter of the game. With a final score of 61-58 over Cincinnati State, Sinclair was able to secure their 10th win of the season and their 4th conference win. Madison Schroeder and Ashtin Brandon each had 7 points and Sara Thornton added to her score total with 5 points.
Sinclair and Cincinnati each had 39 team rebounds. Sinclair had a total of 29 turnovers for the game while Cincinnati State had 19.
Ashtin Brandon led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Alonna Skipper had 14 points. Sara Thornton and Madison Schroeder each had 9 points for the game.
For Cincinnati State: Samia Carter had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Dameras Whitlock and Tiarna Harfield each added 11 points.
Sinclair Women’s next home game will be Wednesday, February 17th at 5:30 pm hosting Ohio State-Lima (14-7, 5-2).
All home games are played in Building 8 on the downtown Dayton campus.
