Dayton, Ohio- Sinclair Women's basketball takes down University of Cincinnati-Clermont in their first of two meetings this season 77-69. The Tartans were led by O'Sha Owens (5'5" sophomore guard from Elida, Ohio) who had 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sinclair improves to 2-0 on the season while UC-Clermont falls to 2-1.
The first half saw the Sinclair Tartans come out hot on both ends of the floor as they immediately went on a 9-0 run six minutes into the game. UC-Clermont was able to get their feet underneath them and go on a run of their own. They were able to cut the lead to three with 6:11 remaining in the half after a 7-0 run. O'Sha Owens was able to control the game at the end of the first half with perfect shooting from the floor with six points, two of which came from an isolation, drive to the basket, and a pull-up jump shot with 3.2 seconds left in the half. High press defense caused 14 Cougar turnovers and as a result, Sinclair took a 34-33 lead into the locker room.
UC-Clermont came out of halftime looking to get back into the game. The Cougars went on a couple of runs to get them back into the game. Clermont went on an 8-2 run midway through the second half that tied the game up at 42. This run was due to efficient shooting from beyond the arc for the Cougars as they went 5 of 7. At the end of the game, what prevailed was the Tartan's relentless full court pressure defense. It resulted in for 16 steals by the Tartans and 29 turnovers for the Cougars. Comparatively, Sinclair took better care of the ball this half having only 5 turnovers.
Notable performances for the game include Sinclair's Sara Thornton (5'7" freshman guard out of Kenton Ridge H.S.) contributed 18 points, 4 rebounds and four steals. For UC-Clermont, four players had double figures in scoring including Kelsey Finn (17), Lydia Jordan (12), Tess Jenike (12) and Brooke Catauro (10).
Sinclair's hosts Ohio State University-Lima at 5:30pm this Thursday, November 13th, in Building 8, P.A.C Gymnasium.
