DAYTON, OH – The Sinclair women's basketball team (14-15, 6-5) hosted Cuyahoga (4-15, 2-8) on Saturday. Sinclair participated in the "Play 4 Kay" initiative which raises awareness for breast cancer. Many women's basketball programs take part in this event to pay tribute to the late Kay Yow battled breast cancer and lost her fight in 2009. Yow, a former coach at North Carolina State was a past president and founding member of the WBCA. She founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers. The mission of the fund is to raise money for scientific research, assist the undeserved and unify people for a common cause. Sinclair took donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund during Saturday's games.
Sinclair went on a 7-0 lead to start the game. After a low scoring first 8 minutes O'Sha Owens (5-4/FR – Elida H.S., Elida, OH) got Sinclair going with a jumper that put them ahead 11-5. Cuyahoga took its first lead of the game at 9:00 16-14. Ashley Morrow (5-6/FR – Springboro H.S., Springboro, OH) hit a 3 to give Sinclair a 17-16 lead and O'Sha Owens hit a jumper off the dribble to put Sinclair up 19-16.
Ashley Morrow hit a 3 with 5:10 remaining in the first half and Sinclair had a 27-18 lead. O'Sha Owens got a steal with 2:00 left and made the layup putting Sinclair up 31-24. Sinclair led Cuyahoga at halftime 35-24. O'Sha Owens led Sinclair with 11 points.
Cuyahoga went on a 4-0 run to start the second half cutting the Sinclair lead to 35-28. Ashley Morrow hit a three and gave Sinclair a 41-28 lead and triggered Sinclair's mount to pull away. Brooke Smith (5-5/SO – Bellbrook H.S., Bellbrook, OH) hit a 3 and gave Sinclair a 49-33 lead with 11:00 to play.
Sinclair maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. Cuyahoga had 27 turnovers and Sinclair had 25 points off of turnovers. Sinclair defeated Cuyahoga 65-48. Sinclair shot 63.6% from the free throw line.
Sinclair was led by O'Sha Owens who put up 19 points. Ashley Morrow tallied 13 points and also had 8 rebounds. Jenae Curtiss (5-9/FR – Thurgood Marshall H.S., Dayton, OH) recorded 11 rebounds and also had 5 points and 2 assists. Sakia Prude (5-3/FR – Thurgood Marshall H.S., Dayton, OH) recorded 7 points, 5 rebounds and snagged 5 steals.
Sinclair plays in their final home game on Saturday, March 1. Sinclair will host Owens at 2:00 PM. The men's game will follow at 4:00 PM. All home games are held at Sinclair Community College in the gymnasium in building 8.
