(13) Sinclair Men’s Basketball wins home opener
November 9, 2016
Dayton, Ohio – The (13)Sinclair (2-0) Men’s basketball team returned home after a successful opening weekend to knock off visiting Miami University-Middletown Thunderhawks (0-3) 83-74.
Just before the game, the OCCAC named Sophomore Akiean Frederick (6-9/SO – Franklin Heights H.S.) Player of the Week for his 21 points 9 rebounds in the 108-66 win over Kellogg.
The night got started on a special note as Sinclair raised the 2015-16 OCCAC Championship banner to the rafters of Building 8 Arena.
Playing without one starter and a key contributor off the bench due to illness, Sinclair adjusted the lineup and played a couple of players out of position. Both players not in uniform hurt the normally strong front court but tonight the Pride had to move a Guard down to Forward causing different rotations.
As expected, Sinclair struggled offensively only scoring 42 points in the first half while committing 9 unforced turnovers. The normal power game was stuck in the slow lane and could not find any energy. The Pride was able to hold on to a slim 42-36 halftime lead behind 17 points from Akiean Frederick.
The Second half the Pride got exposed on the glass as the Thunderhawk stayed within striking distance behind 21 offensive rebounds. Even when Sinclair push the lead up to 16 points, the visitors would find a way to get it back to 8 points.
The key off the bench was Sophomore Tri-Captain Jackson Pietrzak (6-1/SO – Dixie H.S.) as he sparked the late run with great hustle and key upperclassman plays. Jackson’s play in the last 8 minutes of the game was energy the Pride was looking as it seemed to be contagious not only with the team on the floor but also with the crowd in the stands. Pietrzak had back to back key plays that broke the lead open. He dove on a loose ball that allowed the Pride to score an easy transition basket and followed it up with a dagger three.
Akiean Frederick had a game high in both scoring (27) and rebounding (15) for his first double-double of the season. Tyrone Gibson (6-3/FR – Beachwood H.S.) continues his strong play as he racked up 18 points and 2 block shots. Dayton native Dwayne Chastain (6-3/SO – Thurgood Marshall H.S.) added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assist. Quinnten McComas (6-2/SO – Marion Harding H.S.) collected 13 points on the night.
On Friday the 11th, Sinclair will honor all vets with a military appreciation day. The Pride will host St. Clair County at 7:30 and at halftime, Col. Rick Johns (WPAFB) will swear in the new Air Force recruits at mid-court.
All home games are played on the Downtown Dayton Campus in the only arena in the nation named: Building 8.
