(13) Sinclair Men’s Basketball opens 2016-17 with a 108-66 road win

November 5, 2016

Dayton, Ohio – The (13)Sinclair (1-0) Men’s basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a commanding 108 – 66 Region XII non-conference road win against Kellogg (0-2) in Battle Creek, MI.

Picked by the OCCAC coaches to repeat as OCCAC regular season champs and being ranked #13 in the pre-season NJCAA National Division II Men’s Basketball Polls, the Pride took to the road to start another title run.

This was the 3rd all-time meeting between the two institutions with the last match-up coming back in 1990.  With the win today, Sinclair has won all three meeting.

Opening the season with a victory has become a norm for the Pride as Sinclair has now won 11 straight season opening games under Coach Price.  Sinclair is currently on an 8 game non-conference road winning streak and has won 20 of the last 21 non-conference road games.

As predicted, both teams got off to a slow early season start.  After being tied at 9 all, Sinclair went on a 41-15 run in the first half to build the 50-24 half time margin.  Leading the way at half was Freshman Guard Tyrone Gibson (6-3/FR – Beachwood H.S.) with 16 points of his game high 22 points.

The undersized and over matched Bruins had no answer for the speed or size of the Pride.  Sinclair backcourt pressure kept Kellogg out of any form of offense and forced the home team into a number of live ball turnovers leading to easy transition baskets.

When Sinclair was not running, they utilized a strong inside game and pounded the ball forcing a total of 29 fouls on Kellogg.  The Pride made great use of those 29 fouls and converted on 32 of a total 40 free throws ((80%).

The second half was not much better for the Bruins as Sinclair was able to turn up the heat to pull away.  With about 15 minutes remaining in the game, Kellogg used its last time (6 total) to once again stop a Sinclair run.  This was going to be a rough last 15 minutes for the Bruins as Coach Price had not use a timeout and a safe bet would be, he would not use one tonight.

Sinclair paced 5 players in double figures with Tyrone Gibson with 22 points.  Akiean Frederick (6-9/SO – Franklin Heights H.S.) posted 21 points and 9 rebounds.  Both Dwayne Chastain (6-3/SO – Thurgood Marshall H.S.) added 18 points and Jordan Kinney (6-3/FR Charleston WV Capital H.S.) 13 points with both chipping in 7 assist.

Sinclair will host Miami University-Middletown on Wednesday the 9th, banner night as we raise the 2015-16 OCCAC regular season championship banner.  On Friday the 11th, Sinclair will honor all vets with a military appreciation day.  The Pride will host St. Clair County at 7:30 and at halftime, Col. Rick Johns (WPAFB) will swear in the new Air Force recruits at mid-court.

All home games are played on the Downtown Dayton Campus in the only arena in the nation named: Building 8.
