Sinclair Men’s Basketball advance with a 91-78 NJCAA Tourney win
Dayton, OH-The Sinclair Men’s Basketball (22-9) continued their post-season streak with a key win in the first round of the NJCAA Division II District tournament against the Chargers of Edison State Community College (17-14).
With a win-or-go-home game at stake, both teams came out with good energy as they traded 3-pointer early. Transition was the key as each team took turns scoring easy buckets.
Offense came alive on the heels of stingy defense as the Pride kept the Chargers from making any sustained scoring runs. Sinclair started to take advantage of its size on the front line as the visitors could not defend the paint. In the first half, Sinclair scored on 14 of 24 attempts (58%) in the paint.
Not all parts of the offense was working as Sinclair still experienced too many turnovers and missed free throws to help keep Edison close. Despite these errors, Sinclair maintained their lead at the end of the 1st half 43-32.
The second half the game started to turn more physical as Sinclair took control of the boards, out rebounding Edison 50-36. Once Sinclair pushed the lead out beyond double figures, Edison could only make mini runs to get it back to 10.
Edison could not get over the hump and cut the lead below 10 as Sinclair make timely baskets and got key defensive rebounds. Late in the Second half, the lead grew to 18 points (71-53) and Sinclair started to manage the clock and each possession.
Coming down the stretch with about 5 minutes remaining, Edison made one final desperation push to save their season. Trying to cut into an 18 point margin proved too much as once again they got to within 10 but could not break through.
In the end, Sinclair had the size to pull out a 1st round tournament win 91-78.
All five Sinclair starter scored double figures, paced by Akiean Frederick (6-9/SO-Franklin Heights H.S.) with his 25 career double-double and a game high 31 points and 10 rebounds. LiDonta Hicks-Gentry (6-7/FR-Fort Wayne Snider H.S.) collected 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Dwayne Chastain, Jr (6-3/SO-Thurgood Marshall H.S.) knocked in 12 points and handed out 9 assist while Quinnten McComas (6-2/SO-Marion Harding H.S.) chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Jaquan Harrison (6-4/FR-Columbus Africentric H.S.) also scored 10 points with 6 rebounds.
With the win, Sinclair is now the only team to advance to the District Final Four in each of the last 4 years.
Sinclair Men’s Basketball will play their next tournament game at Ohio Christian against Cincinnati State on March 10 at 6:00 pm.
