#11 Sinclair Men’s Falls in 2OT to Cincinnati State 99-106
Dayton, OH-The Sinclair Men’s Basketball (12-3, 1-2) lost a tough home game tonight to the Surge from Cincinnati State (11-5, 3-0). The Tartans knew it was not going to be easy, but the Surge were able to show up tonight and leave with a win. The win was not going to be handed to either team and they were going to have to work hard for it. That is exactly what each team did until the very end and into overtime.
Sinclair had a strong start to the game against Cincinnati State. The Tartans were able to go on a 9-1 run against the Surge, which included 3 3-point FGs. Both sides were aggressive on the ball throughout. The game was very physical from each team, which can be expected in conference play. Cincinnati State came back to tie the game at 15-15. Sinclair had some trouble making free throws, which could have possibly been their downfall. Akiean Frederick (6-08/SO-Franklin Heights H.S.) ran into some foul trouble in the first half and was therefore benched for most of it. There were multiple lead changes and ties with Sinclair taking its largest lead at 44-34. The Tartans went into halftime with the lead 46-40.
The second half of the game got very interesting for both teams. Cincinnati State was not giving up without a fight nor going anywhere. Turnovers were a problem for Sinclair as they were throughout the second half. The Tartans held onto the lead until the Surge tied it 68-68 with 7:08 remaining. Cincinnati State took the lead short thereafter and Sinclair let them back into the game. The Tartan Pride were taking unnecessary shots and with under a minute to go, Sinclair was down 79-80. With 31.4 second remaining, Dwayne Chastain, Jr. (6-03/SO-Thurgood Marshall H.S.) makes a 3-point FG to give Sinclair the lead 82-81. Cincinnati State went on to tie Sinclair 82-82 which is where regulation ended and overtime started.
In the first overtime, Sinclair had good ball movement, but again had trouble making their free throws. This lead the Cincinnati State taking the lead 90-91. The Tartans were able to tie the game again 91-91 with 25.5 seconds left and this is where the first overtime ended.
The second overtime was all Cincinnati State. Both the offense and defense for the Surge were working. It was almost as if the Tartans had given up or were too worn out. All-in-all, Cincinnati State finished the game in their favor with a score of 99-106.
Dwayne Chastain, Jr. scored a career high with 23 points.
Akiean Frederick had another double-double with 31 points and 18 rebounds.
Sinclair Men play at home next on Monday January 16 against Lakeland at 3:0\0 P.M.
All home games are played in Building 8 on the downtown Dayton campus.
