(4) Sinclair Men’s Basketball Breaks record with 121-78 win over WVU-Parkersburg

Dayton, Ohio – The Sinclair (14-0/3-0 OCCAC) Men’s basketball team entered the new year with a record breaking 121-78 performance over the visiting RiverHawks of West Virginia Univ-Parkersburg (9-1). This was the 14th consecutive win to start the season and that breaks the old mark of 13 straight held by Coach Kevin O’Neill and his 1969-70 Tartan Pride. The 14 straight victories also sets a record for longest winning streak of any Sinclair Men’s Basketball team.
This was a matchup of two undefeated teams as WVU-Parkersburg came in with a perfect 9-0 record and Sinclair rolling with a 13-0 mark and nationally ranked #4. Both teams were at the top of most every offensive category as the RiverHawks were scoring 97 points per game and Sinclair ranked 5th in Division II Junior College at 97.8 points per game.
The Pride took early control right off the bat and never looked back. Sinclair outscored WVU-P 64-37 in the first half behind lights out shooting as they connected on 61% from the field and 50% behind the arc. Akiean Frederick (6-8/FR – Columbus Franklin Heights H.S paced all players with 11 first half points.
The second half was much of the same as Sinclair continued the hot shooting and control of the board. The Pride out rebounded the Riverhawks 65-37 and had 25 offensive rebounds. The battle went to Sinclair as they held the Riverhawks 20 points below their season scoring average. Sinclair’s bench also outscored WVU-P’s bench 42-23.
A Balanced attack as Sinclair had seven players score in double figures and four players record a double-double. Reshardd Harris (6-4/SO – Detroit Michigan Collegiate H.S.) recorded 20 points and 13 rebounds and Steven Perriere (6-7/SO – Paris, France) also recorded a game high 20 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Manny Powell (5-8/SO – Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) chipped in with 18 points and handed out 10 assist and Jalen Robertson (6-8/SO – Franklin Co. VA H.S.) came off the bench with 14 points and 10 boards. Marcellous Washington (6-1/SO – Lexington KY Bryan Station H.S.) scored 15 points and teammates Caleb Walker (6-3/SO – Gahanna Christian H.S.) and Akiean Frederick both finished with 13 points each.
Sinclair will jump back into conference play as they travel to Cincinnati State Wednesday night to take on the Surge. They will return home on Saturday to continue conference play as Lorain County will come to Sinclair for a 3pm tipoff. Starting Wednesday, the Pride will begin a stretch of 16 games in little less than 8 weeks getting ready for March Madness. All home games are played on the Downtown Dayton Campus in the only arena in the nation named: Building 8.
