(2) Sinclair Men’s Basketball continue run with a 72-64 win over Cuyahoga
January 16, 2016
Dayton, Ohio – The #2 ranked Sinclair (18-0 / 6-0 OCCAC) Men’s basketball team stays unbeaten and at the top of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) after winning wire to wire against Cuyahoga (10-10 / 1-4 OCCAC) 72-64.
Building 8 Arena was the place to be on this wintery Saturday. Both Men’s & Women’s teams were in action and following the Pride men, the 5th and 6th grade Oakwood Youth Basketball Jacks hosted the CJ Eagles.
Between the Sinclair Women’s & Men’s games this afternoon, 5 members of the 1981 NJCAA National Championship Bowling team was honored at mid-court celebrating their 35th year anniversary of the Championship.
On the court, Cuyahoga found scoring on the Sinclair defense rather troubling as the Pride went into lock-down mode holding the Challengers to 27 first half points on 35.5% shooting. This was not a typical Sinclair transition game as the Pride had the advantage on the inside. And that is where Sinclair focused their efforts on offense. Even though the game was played at a little slower pace, Sinclair showed they can play many different styles effectively.
At the end of the first 20 minutes, Sinclair held a 35-27 lead and seemed to be in complete control.
The second half the Pride was able to continue the stifling defense and at one point pushed the lead out to 19 (57-38) points midway through the second half. Late down the stretch, the visitors finally connected on back to back 3 pointers to cut the margin down below double figures for the first time all half but the game had already been decided.
The win today also improves Head Coach Jeff Price’s home record against Cuyahoga to 10-3 all time.
Sinclair’s main two inside players accounted for 32 of the 72 (44%) total points scored by the Pride tonight as the Pride was content with pounding the ball inside time after time.
Leading the way for the Pride was Akiean Frederick (6-8/FR – Columbus Franklin Heights H.S.) with 18 points and Steven Perriere (6-7/SO – Paris, France) with 14 points.
Sinclair will travel to Celina on Wednesday to take on University of Dayton Alum Mark Ashman and his Wright State University-Lake Lakers in a non-conference matchup. They will follow it up with a road trip to Edison State on Saturday.
