(3) Sinclair Men’s Basketball continues home winning streak with 74-70 win

February 3, 2016

Dayton, Ohio – (3) Sinclair (22-1 / 9-1 OCCAC) Men’s basketball team had to survive a hot shooting Cincinnati State (14-11 / 3-6 OCCAC) to hold on late and pull out the 74-70 home win.

Building 8 Arena was once again full of energy with the baseball team back at it and a number of local fans coming out to see what this Sinclair team is all about.

It showed early what the Surge had in store for the Pride, they were going to live and die by the three point line.  And it kept the visitors in the game as Cincinnati State connected on 12 out of 25 three point attempts (48%).

The largest lead of the game came in the first half as Sinclair was able to pull out to an 8 point (31-23) margin before the Surge knocked down back-to-back 3’s to keep it close.

The second have both teams took turns scoring as Sinclair managed to keep a small margin.

Late in the game, Cincinnati State took a brief lead only to have Marcellous Washington (6-1/SO-Lexington KY Bryan Station H.S.) knock down a critical three to give the Pride a 2 point lead.

The game seemed to turn on two late game plays.  Marcellous making both free throws on an intentional foul call when he was on a breakaway and Caleb Walker (6-3/SO – Gahanna Christian H.S.) getting a back door layup.  Both plays came at the time Cincinnati State was pressuring and trying to create a turnover.

The win tonight is the first time a Sinclair team has had a series sweep against Cincinnati State in over 20 years, capping a 80-60 early January win in Cincinnati.

Marcellous Washington paced all Sinclair scorers with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assist.  Akiean Frederick (6-8/FR – Columbus Franklin Heights H.S.) had another double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds as the freshman is starting to control the paint.  Caleb Walker and Manny Powell (5-8/SO – Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) both had 10 and 11 points respectively.

Sinclair will travel to Owens on Saturday and Clark State on Wednesday next week.

Next home game for the Pride will be Wednesday the 17th as Sinclair will host non-conference opponent Ohio State-Lima at 7:30pm

All home games are played on the Downtown Dayton Campus and in the only arena in the nation named Building 8.
