Sinclair baseball advances to College World Series

Dayton, Ohio – Sinclair punched it’s ticket back to the NJCAA Division II College World Series Saturday with a Regional XII tournament win in Sandusky, OH.

Sinclair currently has a 44-9 overall record that included a 31 game winning streak and its 8th conference championship in ten years.  Sophomore pitcher Kyle Ruehlman (SO/RHP – Milford H.S.) continued to dominate the OCCAC and earned back to back OCCAC Pitcher of the Year honors joining Coach Dintaman as he earned back to back Coach of the Year honors.

Just before getting underway, the region announced the 1st Team All-Region honors and Sinclair had two players named; Brandon Henson (SO/CF – Pickerington Central H.S.) and Alex Jacob (FR/INF – Indian Lake H.S.).

Playing the NJCAA Region XII Tournament for the first time at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, OH, Sinclair took early control cruising through the first three games as this was the first time in almost 20 years that the Region tournament was held outside Battle Creek, Michigan.

Heading into the final day with Sinclair only needing to win one of the next two to advance, the schedule needed to get moved up to 9am due to the possibility of inclement weather rolling in late afternoon.  If that was not enough, Sinclair had to face off against the #2 team in the nation Kellogg CC.

The number 1 seed in the tournament, Kellogg had gotten upset in the first game and needed to fight their way back to Championship Saturday through the consolation bracket.  With their backs against the wall, Kellogg handled Sinclair in game one posting a 10-4 victory over the Tartan Pride and forcing a final game.

The Championship game continued along the same path as the first game of the day, Kellogg held the lead through the first 7 innings up 7-4 until the rain.  After a slight rain delay Sinclair busted open the bottom of the 8th with 7 runs to put the top ranked team down to their final 3 outs.  Now up 11-7, all Sinclair had to do is find a way to collect three outs for a trip to the college world series.

Sinclair was already on their 4th pitcher of the game and needing just one more out when Coach Dintaman brought in Jake Webb (FR/RHP – Fairborn H.S.) to shut the door.

As champions of the regional tournament, Sinclair placed three players on the all-tournament team; Dylan Carpenter (FR/C – Little Miami H.S.), Luke Williamson (FR/LHP – Canal Winchester H.S.) and Kyle Ruehlman.  The tournament Most Valuable Player went to Sinclair’s Jeremiah Clarke (FR/OF – Westerville Central H.S.) and Coach Dintaman earned Coach of the Year.

For the second time in three years, the Sinclair Tartan Pride will be traveling to Enid, OK to play in the NJCAA Division II College World Series.  The tournament will start on May 26th and is a double elimination event played at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Sinclair will open the World Series as the #5 seed playing #4 NOC-Enid (host school) on Saturday night at 7:15 pm (CST).  Winner will advance to Monday at 4:00pm.  Follow the action on Sinclair Facebook and Twitter.
