(8) Baseball completes 4 game sweep of Macomb
Dayton, OH – (8) The Sinclair baseball (21-2) team is off to another great start and tuning up to start conference play April 1st. The Pride won all four games this weekend easily against NJCAA Region XII opponent Macomb (4-19) as the Pride continue to dominate region play.
The story of the weekend was the Sinclair arms and Macomb found that out Friday as starter Brody Basilone (SO/RHP – Mansfield Lexington H.S.) fired a complete game 7 inning shutout holding the visitors to only 4 hits. Connor Cleary (SO/1B – Lexington KY Catholic H.S.) took care of the offense in game one as he drove in the game's first score in the bottom of the 1st and smashed a deep solo homer to right field in the bottom of the 6th to complete the scoring. The 2 runs from Cleary was all Brody needed as the Pride opened the series with a 2-0 victory.
The nightcap was no different for the Sinclair hurlers and it was Jake Mason's (SO/RHP – Anderson H.S.) turn to shut down Macomb and take home the win. And that he did, holding the Monarchs scoreless for the first 5 innings until the Pride bats rallied in the bottom of the 5th. The Pride broke the game open with one out in the bottom of the fifth with a line drive single up the middle from Alec Turner (SO/3B – Carlisle H.S.) scoring Tyler Cowles (SO/OF – Grove City H.S.) from second and opening the flood gates with 4 more runs before the Pride was finished. Travis Rowland (SO/RHP – Fairfield H.S.) got the save in the bottom of the ninth pulling the pride out of a jam to finish the game with a 5-4 Friday sweep.
Saturday it was Alex Anders (SO/LHP – Beavercreek H.S.) turn to completely frustrate the Monarchs. After a rough start to the series for Macomb on Friday, Anders was the last Sinclair pitcher they wanted to see. He did not disappoint the home crowd at Grady's Field on Saturday. Alex had complete control of the game striking out 6 and only giving up 3 hits on his way to a 7 inning complete game shutout. The offense got started with two outs in the bottom of the 1st as Sinclair got the party started. Billy Kidd (SO/IF – Marysville H.S.) roped a single with bases loaded scoring 2 runs as Sinclair would eventually score 5 in the bottom of the 1st. The Pride would continue to pound Macomb pitching collecting 4 more runs to cruise to a 9-0 win.
The final game of the four game two day series could not come quick enough the Monarchs and game four was over quick. The final game was a 9 inning blow out as the Pride blasted Macomb 12-3 behind 5 strong innings from Ricky Krieger (SO/RHP – New Philadelphia H.S.) who struck out 6 in five innings of work to notch the win and the series sweep. Scoring was abundant for the Pride and they did it early and often. Both Alec Turner and Daniel O'Keefe (SO/OF-1B – Teays Valley H.S.) blasted home runs and each had 4 and 3 RBI respectively. The Pride banged out 12 runs on 15 hits to complete the series with the 12-3 victory.
But again, the arms was the story for the weekend. Out of a possible 30 innings played this weekend; the Sinclair starters threw 25 inning, allowed 4 earned runs on 19 hits while striking out 22 and recording 4 wins – 2 complete games & 2 shutouts. Strong weekend on the mound for the Pride.
The Pride will get their final tune up Tuesday before conference play starts as they host Ashland University JV in a mid-week/non-conference doubleheader starting at 2pm.
Sinclair plays all their home games at Grady's Field at Athletes in Action in Xenia, OH.
