33 new Sinclair Student-Athletes registered to vote during orientation

The Sinclair athletic department took time away from all the activities associated with the first day of classes for the Athletic department orientation.  Monday was a long first day for most of our student athletes and it finished off with several speakers and individual team meeting or practice.  About 85 student-athlete attended the annual kickoff to the academic year hosted by Jeff Price, Athletic Director.

This year athletics added an additional speaker to the program, former NCAA Division I Head Basketball Coach and Marshall University Hall of Fame inductee – Coach Greg White.

Ms. Beverly King - Supervisor of Registration for the Montgomery County (OH) Board of Elections started the program and spoke about the importance of the election cycle, but she also emphasized how critical it is for each citizens to vote in all elections not just the big ones.  Pointing out that every vote is needed during the local elections as those are sometimes the issues that have a greater impact in our community, such as County Commissioners, Mayoral and even school bond issues.

At the end of the meeting, the athletic department once again had 100% voter registration among Sinclair student-athletes for the fifth consecutive year. Ms. King reported that we added 33 new voters to the process as the student-athletes filled out voter registration forms for all Ohio counties including several players submitting registration forms for Kentucky and Indiana.

Voting is a privilege for citizens of the United States and a responsibility for every citizen. Information that will be helpful to you about voting in the state of Ohio can be found at http://www.mcohio.org or by contacting the Board of Elections at the address listed below.

Several speakers from different on campus departments volunteered their time to come in and speak to the student-athletes during the orientation.

Ending the program was our keynote speaker, Coach Greg White of Greg White Speaks.  Coach White is a motivational speaker for student-athletes.  He inspires students to find their passions, chase their dreams and rise to the top level – in sports and in life.

Coach White’s message included his ingredients for success (5 C’s); communications, costume, character, challenge & choices.  During his high energy presentation he touched on many different topics such as how to handle distractions, being on time, accountability, teamwork, appreciation and attitude of gratitude all while spinning a basketball.  Coach was not only spinning a basketball on his finger, he demonstrated how he brushed his teeth spinning a ball on a tooth brush, combed his hair while spinning a ball on his comb, shaved while spinning a ball on his razor, read a book while spinning the ball on the corner of his book and even signing his college letter of intent while continuously spinning the ball on his pen.

Coach White has spoken at numerous universities such as UCLA, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland and Alabama as well as hundreds of organizations like Mercedes and BMW.  He was the 1977 West Virginia high school player of the year.  Started 113 at point guard at Marshall University and still holds the career assist record of 701, just ahead of current Houston Rockets head coach and fellow Marshall Alum Mike D’Antoni.

He was inducted into the Marshall University Hall of Fame and was an assistant coach on the 1995 NCAA Division I National Champion UCLA Bruins.  During his 28 year college coaching career, he has graduated over 90% of his student-athletes.
