October 20, 2017
Dayton, Ohio-The Sinclair athletics family hosted its inaugural Hall of Fame induction Friday night in Building 8 Arena. In an emotional ceremony featuring Tom Archdeacon as the Master of Ceremonies, Sinclair inducted Jim Harrison and Linda O’Keefe.
The evening started with opening remarks from Sinclair’s Provost Dr. Dave Collins. Dr. Collins recalled his connections with both inductees and shared accounts of their time at Sinclair.
Next, Sinclair’s Athletic Director introduced the Master of Ceremonies, Tom Archdeacon, Columnist, Dayton Daily News. In usual Tom Archdeacon fashion, he led the audience on a journey through the career paths of Coach Jim Harrison and Coach Linda O’Keefe. As an award winning sportswriter and Hall of Famer himself, Tom had written articles on both coaches and shared his insights.
The first inductee was Jim Harrison, Sinclair Head Baseball Coach from 1988-2002 and Assistant Baseball Coach from 2003-2008.
Former player and current Sinclair Head Coach Steve Dintaman was the first to speak about Coach Harrison. Coach Dintaman shared his personal memories of Coach Harrison as well as Coach O'Keefe. Former Sinclair Athletic Director Jack Giambrone also paid tribute to Coach O'Keefe and Coach Harrison.
After the second speaker, it was time for the induction of Coach Harrison. The son of the late Coach Harrison, Tim Harrison, accepted the induction plaque for his father who passed away in 2008.
Our second inductee of the first Hall of Fame class, former Head Women’s Basketball Coach (1978-2003), Head Women’s Tennis Coach (1979-1998) and Assistant Athletic Director (2000-2003) Coach Linda O’Keefe.
The first to speak on behalf of Coach O’Keefe, was Becky Beekman, former Tennis & Basketball player and later Assistant Coach. She shared several stories about first playing for Coach O’Keefe then joining her on the bench as her Assistant Coach.
The final speaker of the night was former Sinclair Athletic Director Norma Dycus. She touched on both inductees but mostly Coach O’Keefe and her drive to always win. Norma had the most unique perspective of Coach O'Keefe they began their Sinclair careers at roughly the same time. Over the course of thirty years, they developed a strong bond and friendship.
Accepting Coach O'Keefe's induction plaque, was her sister Donna Sullivan.
Tom Archdeacon offered closing remarks and Jeff Price officially closed the 2017 Sinclair Athletics Hall of Fame Induction.
Post-Ceremony activities were hosted in the lobby outside the gym by Dr. Matt Massie, Manager of the Office of Student & Community Engagement. The reception offered light hors d’oeuvres and plenty of stories as former players had a chance to catch up.
In an atmosphere that felt like a homecoming, former players were mingling with current student-athletes. A night that remembered two great Sinclair individuals and brought former players back to campus was a great start to what is sure to be a strong and proud tradition.
